When two notes are a half step apart, they clash because their sound waves are almost the same frequency, creating strong interference (beating). The following contains far too many explanations of harmony. Some viewers might like to look away now 👀 My latest composition of the week effort features chords that seem like they shouldn’t work, but they actually do. The sort of dissonance that actually sounds really interesting, and full of flavour rather than ugly (I think so anyway!). The first 8 bars are full of these chords. The trick I think, is to start with something that is fairly conventional, then add one or two extra notes higher up the chord that shouldn’t work, and they normally will. For example, in bar 1 the lower part of this chord is B7b13, but the top three voices are a D augmented chord. The D also serves as a #9 to the B7 chord, but also as one of the 3 voices in the D augmented chord. The A# at the top of the chord (in theory at least) clashes with the B natural and A natural elsewhere in the chord, but because of the spacing, it doesn’t sound like a clash. Also the F# in this chord creates a dissonance with the G below, but I think we hear the top three voices almost as a separate entity to the lower four voices, whilst also feeling comfortable with these upper voices as colourful extensions of the chord lower down.
