If Scripture alone is the sole infallible rule, then one must ask by what authority Scripture is identified as Scripture, interpreted as to essentials, and distinguished from heresy, private opinion, and merely plausible exegesis. The usual Protestant answer appeals either to the “self-authenticating” character of Scripture, the inner testimony of the Spirit, or the consensus of the faithful; yet each of these either collapses into subjectivism or quietly borrows the very ecclesial authority Protestantism denies. The canon is not delivered with an inspired table of contents, so “Scripture alone” already presupposes a prior authority competent to identify Scripture. If that authority is the Church, then the Church is not merely ministerial in the thin Protestant sense; if it is the individual conscience illumined by the Spirit, then doctrinal pluralism becomes inevitable, which is exactly what history displays. Protestantism then tries to preserve unity by retreating into “mere Christianity” or “essential doctrines,” but that move is circular, since the question is precisely who authoritatively defines what counts as essential. The result is a communion-principle that cannot secure communion: thousands of bodies, contradictory teachings on baptism, Eucharist, salvation, predestination, ecclesiology, ordination, sanctification, and divorce, all claiming fidelity to the same Bible under the same Spirit.
