Gleichzeitig wird es im Mainstream oft so dargestellt, als ginge es darum, Übungen zu machen und sich zu beruhigen. Dein Nervensystem zu regulieren heisst nicht, dass du dich beruhigst. Es heisst, dass du lernst, mit dem in Kontakt zu sein, was in dir ist, auch wenn es unangenehm ist. Dieses Bild von der ruhigen, meditativen Frau als Inbegriff von Regulation ist falsch. Ich habe neulich einen Kurs gegeben, in dem Menschen zu mir kamen und sagten: Aber ich bin aktiviert, als wäre das ein Problem. Es gibt Übungen, die aktivieren das Nervensystem, und daran ist nichts falsch. Im Gegenteil. Es geht darum, die Aktivierung, die im Körper ist, wahrzunehmen und halten zu können. Das nennt man Containment. Erst wenn wir lernen, mit dem umzugehen, was in uns ist, können wir neue Verhaltensweisen aufbauen. Erst dann sind wir nicht mehr in Vermeidungsstrategien gefangen, die unser Leben bestimmen. Das ist Regulation. Und das ist Freiheit.
