I did things conventionally backwards with Ksana. Our first home together was actually a house that I rented with a backyard. But then we moved to Toronto, and since then we have lived in two condos. And you know what? I think we both actually love condo living! Yes, there are things about having a house and a backyard that I miss sometimes. And this is definitely not hating on anyone who has a house with a backyard for their dog - that’s amazing! But I feel as though condo living with a dog is underappreciated, so here are the things that we love about living in a condo: - Friends all around! We have made human friends and dog friends with people that live in our condo building and it’s been such a great way to get to know people and have a sense of community right around us. - Living in a condo in the city means that Ksana gets to have new experiences all the time and see new places on a regular basis. It wasn’t until we moved to Toronto that Ksana first experienced taking the subway to places (she loves it) - Living in a condo means that we have neighbours who can easily help watch our dog and we can help watch their dog (just have to take the elevator!). Many many times I have dogsat for a neighbour and a neighbour in the building has dogsat for me... especially on days when work is really busy and I can’t get home from the office in time for her walk. It’s okay to have a different taste but when you project them on others, when you are constantly a victim of consumerism yourself, it shows your insecurities. You’d glorify a conventionally attractive person with Eurocentric features, someone who is tall, who is skinny, who belongs to a higher class, for wearing skinny jeans or bright colours, but if somebody who doesn’t have the same kind of exposure as you to social norms and standards as you does it, it’s a problem. Everything is fashionable, everything is trendy, everything is cool, until it reaches people of a lower socioeconomic status. And suddenly you find it tacky. But for that piece of fashion to be accessible to them, it took a lifetime. You can jump on micro trends real quick, just as quick as your clothing end up in a landfill even if you thrift. But to majority of the world, it’s still a luxury to own a piece you love, often taking months to save up for that one pair of pants or shoes.
