Is erythritol, causing heart attacks and strokes? The article published in ‘Nature’ and blown up in the media seems to make this association. but the study is only correlating elevated blood levels of erythritol to rates of heart attacks and strokes. They did not look at dietary intake. Erythritol is naturally increased in people with cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic dysfunction. In other words, as people are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, the erythritol blood levels are naturally elevated. If erythritol levels here are bad or good has not been established. It could be bad or it could have a protective function. As far as I’m aware, we don’t know this yet. Erythritol does have some anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and simply showing that it causes red blood cell aggregation in a test tube is not conclusive. And why did this flawed study get so much attention? Could this be in relation to the current topic of increased heart attacks in young people?
