Not all time is equal during a speech. The first 30 seconds buys you another minute of audience attention. All going well, the next minute buys you 3 minutes. This continues on until the end. If you don't 'hook' your audience at the start of your speech, good luck engaging the audience with the rest of it. It seems unfair but those are the rules. Conor Neill @cuchullainn masterfully weaves several techniques into his opening that will leave audience's badly wanting to know more. You could leave the room and they'd wait for your return. This is how: - Firstly: tell a story. Audiences love stories so immediately you'll be giving them your message in a format that they'll want to receive. - Secondly: concrete details. These make the story believable, vivid and provide the context in which the story unfolds e.g. 'in October when I was last in THIS room.' - Thirdly: social proof & authority. He mentions having a conversation with an expert. This demonstrates credibility in 2 ways: 1. He knows experts 2. They share their expertise with him. - Fourthly: emotion- curiosity. What the expert shared was worth considering as it has been stuck in his mind ever since. Naturally we wonder, what is it? This is particularly persuasive because the mystery surrounds changing 'important' perspectives on the topic at hand. Would this also change the minds of the audience? - Finally: the pause. The suspense is intensified by making the audience wait. Mentally they fill in the blanks or become impatient to hear the answer.
