In British tradition, coronations are a showcase of jewels, but things changed at King Charles’s ceremony. Camilla introduced a tiara ban under the guise of ‘modernity’; in my opinion, the real intention was to be the only woman wearing a crown at the ceremony. But Kate did not bow down to the restriction and had a silver headpiece made by Alexander McQueen; since no one else had a tiara, she drew all the spotlights to herself. But did you know that this crown is an actual financial instrument for Iran?
Let me explain. In the 1930s, the Shah of Iran, Reza Shah Pahlavi, transferred the ownership of all the imperial jewels from the royal family to the state. The jewels became sovereign reserve assets, used to support confidence in the national currency. That decision had very practical consequences decades later. In the 1960s, Reza Shah’s son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, commissioned Van Cleef & Arpels to create the coronation jewels for his wife, Farah Pahlavi, using stones from the national treasure. But the gems could not leave Iran. So a Van Cleef atelier was set up inside the vault itself, with Pierre Arpels supervising the work and travelling more than 20 times to Iran. The crown alone comprises:
36 emeralds,
36 spinels and rubies,
105 pearls,
and 1,469 diamonds. So this isn’t just a crown.
It’s a jewel — and a real asset on a national balance sheet.
