Save this for later! Standing in the cot is normal. It’s age-appropriate. And it usually shows up right when they’re learning new skills - pulling up, cruising, testing their balance. Their body is excited. Their brain wants to practise. That doesn’t mean bedtime has to unravel. Instead of repeatedly laying them down (which can become overstimulating), we teach the skill in the daytime through play. Songs like Sleeping Bunnies are perfect. (The one in this reel!) You’re practising lying down… popping up… lying down again - in a playful, regulated way. So when bedtime comes, it’s not new. Their body already knows how to do it. Then the real shift is in our response. Calm. Predictable. We don’t overstimulate. We don’t overplay our role. We don’t rush to fix every second. Because this is where new patterns and pathways are formed for our little ones. It’s development. With the right guidance, it settles. You may not want to hear this but here’s the truth … Bedtime might go amazingly well and your little falls to sleep within in minutes, BUT to improve sleep overnight you likely need to change bedtime too‼️ Here’s why … If your little one is going into their cot fast asleep or half asleep they’re probably going to wake overnight to be assisted back to sleep again. ✨ Imagine falling asleep in your lovely bed and waking up on the living room floor - kinda what happens if you fall asleep in your parent’s arms then wake up in your cot alone ✨ The first step to improving wake ups is assessing bedtime and figuring out how they’re falling asleep. If it’s not independently then start working on that. A drowsy free bedtime is ideal so they’re doing all the hard work themselves when going off to sleep 😴 Follow @victoriafreer.nurturedsleep for more tips and tricks 💛

402

No one told me this and I wish they had. Babies learn from repetition. Whatever response or behaviour you repeat, you reinforce. Our son woke at 45 minutes every single nap. And every single time, I got him up. Because I thought the nap was over. Because I didn’t know what else to do. I wasn’t doing anything wrong. But I was accidentally reinforcing short naps as the habit. When I changed my response and started supporting him to resettle, his naps extended. Not overnight. But within days. It wasn’t magic. It was understanding sleep. And healthy habits can be built. This is what I help families see. Not just what’s happening, but why it’s happening. And how small shifts in response can create big shifts in sleep. Your takeaway: You’re not stuck with the sleep you have. Habits can change. Gently. Comment AUDIT and I’ll send you my Baby Sleep Audit so you can see which habits might be quietly driving your baby’s sleep patterns. This page is for parents ready to understand the why. @familycentredsleep #babysleephabits #catnapping #sleephelp #gentleparenting #familycentredsleep

Yes! Big physical milestones can disrupt your baby’s sleep.
3,676

Yes! Big physical milestones can disrupt your baby’s sleep. But the good news is, it’s temporary. Learning to crawl takes an enormous amount of energy, both physically and neurologically. And since sleep is a neurological process, when your baby is on the cusp of a new skill, their brain is literally driving them to practice at every opportunity… including during natural wake-ups overnight. So what do you do if your baby wakes at night wanting to practice? Let them. You don’t need to force them back to sleep. Your job is to prioritise sleep and create the opportunity for it, not to make it happen. Often, like this little guy, once they’ve had their practice session, they’ll settle right back down on their own. A few things that help: Lots of floor time during the day will reduce the drive to practice at night. And if they signal they need you, support them using your chosen settling technique. This phase will pass. Trust the process, trust your baby. Follow @thesleepcollective_au for more baby sleep tips.

😴If you're putting your baby to sleep by rocking or feeding
1,732

😴If you're putting your baby to sleep by rocking or feeding at bedtime, they're likely going to wake up after every sleep cycle (sleep cycles roughly last about 1 to 3 hours at night) 💤When they transition from one sleep cycle to the next they'll need your help to fall back asleep because they've come to rely on these sleep associations. 😩They might wake up and realize they're no longer in your arms (rocked to sleep) or on your breast (fed to sleep), and this can startle and disorient them. This confusion makes it harder for them to fall back asleep on their own. 💭Imagine going to bed in your own room and waking up to find you're in a completely different place, like the living room. You wouldn't just roll over and go back to sleep, right? You'd feel disoriented, confused, and likely try to figure out how you ended up there. 🥺Babies experience this exact same feeling when they wake up in a different place than where they fell asleep. It's not about the place itself. It's about the feeling of being 'disconnected" from how they were put to bed. ✅️This is why it's so important for your baby to fall asleep in the same environment they'll wake up in. If you want your baby to sleep through the night, they need to learn to fal asleep independently, without relying on external factors like rocking or feeding. 🙌🏻By helping them learn to self-soothe and fall asleep or their own, they can transition smoothly between sleep cycles and sleep for longer stretches without needing you to intervene. If you're ready to help your baby sleep more soundly and independently through the night, I'd love to support you through a gentle sleep plan tailored to your baby's needs. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒌𝒆-𝒕𝒐-𝒔𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒊𝒒𝒖𝒆 👆 This technique is great for early risers and catnappers - especially those who you can set your watch by… you know, the ones who after at 38 minutes exactly or 5:14am on the dot! Want to try it? Here’s what to do: ⏰ About 10 minutes before you child usually wakes, quietly enter their room and gently pop your hand on them. You may even need to give them a little wriggle. You want to stir them just enough so that they rouse very slightly and enter the next sleep cycle. Usually. they will shift their body slightly or you’ll notice them take a deep intake of breath. Because they’ve entered the next sleep cycle, you should get another 40-60 minutes of sleep! Yay! 🙌 This is great for habit wakers because after you’ve done it for 7-10 days their body will be reprogrammed into a new sleep pattern. You can then stop using the technique and they will sleep longer! 🎉 In my experience, this works for around 90% of babies and children. Of course, there is the risk of them waking fully, but you have nothing to lose by trying! Give it a few attempts and let me know how you get on! If you’re still struggling with an aspect of your child’s sleep then we may need to dig a bit deeper and find out what’s actually going on. Then we can fix it! ✨ For a free 30m chat to see if I can help, DM ‘CHAT’ and I’ll be in touch. . . . . . #babysleeptraining #babysleephelp #babysleepconsultant #toddlersleeptraining #toddlersleephelp

If your aim is for your baby to sleep in their cot overnight
15,646

If your aim is for your baby to sleep in their cot overnight, or for naps, then the ultimate aim is for them to be able to go into there fully awake. If your baby always needs to be in a perfect state to go into their cot and sleep independently, they miss out on learning how to wind down on their own. This can lead to issues with overnight sleep. If they wake up not in that perfect state during the night, you don’t want to be in a position of having to do wind-down time at 3 AM. Allow your baby to go into the cot fully awake and let them practice their own wind-down. If they are throwing their dummies around or just playing that’s completely normal. It’s okay to check in, adjust their position, or pop the dummy back in, but give them space to learn how to manage their sleep independently. This is how they develop those essential skills for better sleep. This baby has been through my 13 steps and has learnt how to manage their own sleep. Before starting they needed feeding and rocking to sleep and now none of this is necessary. Baby is happy playing in theory cot until they are ready to sleep. 🥰 Want to know more? If you’ve been following me for a while, you know my stance
2,003

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know my stance on “sleep regressions.” Apart from the 4 month regression, which does tend to happen around that age, the others can look very different for every child because development doesn’t follow a strict timeline. Corah is 19 months old now and has recently started saying a few words and loving little songs at her baby classes. The past two nights I’ve put her to bed as usual and she’s spent the next hour happily singing in her cot. No calling out, no needing me, but still struggling to fall asleep. A few months ago her version of a “regression” looked very different, she went through a phase of bringing me toy after toy after toy, just like in the video. So what do you actually do during these phases? First, accept that it is a phase and it will pass. Sleep might be a bit disrupted for a while and that is completely normal. Once you spot what your little one is practising, like rolling, sitting, talking, or standing, make sure they get plenty of time to practise during the day. We want them to get it all out of their system in daylight hours rather than at 2am. If bedtime is tricky, I often recommend a focused practice session before the bedtime routine. In the video, Corah and I were in her room with the lights dimmed and she practised for about 35 minutes. When I noticed she slowed down, sat happily, and looked more relaxed, I knew she was ready to wind down. Remember, these phases are temporary. Go back to your usual routine once they pass. And in the meantime, it is completely normal if your little one needs a bit more comfort or has a few extra night wakes. If your baby is however going through a stage of separation anxiety, comment or DM the word HELP and I’ll share a few tips specifically for this. #ToddlerSleep #SleepRegressionTips #GentleSleep #BabySleepSupport #ParentingTipsUK

💜 If they wake at 30 minutes, don’t rush in! Aim for a full hour in their sleep space. This teaches their brain that sleep time isn’t over yet. If they get upset, absolutely go to them, but keep the soothing inside the bedroom. 💜 Optimise the environment. Encourage sleep in a cot, in a dark room (too dark to read a book!), with consistent white noise. We want zero distractions when they drift between sleep cycles. 💜 Stick to a predictable pattern. When sleep follows a routine rather than random timing, their internal body clock actually starts to crave that rest. Tag a tired parent who needs to see this 👇🏻

I see so often people saying they’re ’anti sleep training’ but most of the time they mean harsh methods like cry it out or controlled crying 😢 you won’t get that around here 🚫 but… Even if you’d rather a more relaxed approach to sleep, you can actually improve sleep without using any ‘method’ 👶🏼 Here’s what I’d do to improve sleep without actually sleep training 👇 🩷 Figure out night feedings- for your child’s age are they needed? How many seems right? Is it time to night wean? 🩷 Are night wakings all over the place? Try firstly avoiding bringing your child into your bed if you want to cut out cosleeping like so many of my families do. Next, try settling without taking baby out of the cot 🩷 More structure to your day? Have a similar wake up time each day, place nap 1 around the same time each day too and let the final nap finish around the same time bringing you up to your ‘normal’ bedtime. Structure is key 🔑 Need more personalised help? Comment SLEEP below and I will message you 🩷 #babysleep #toddlersleep #infantsleep #newparents #irishparents
