Know your ice. Ice is starting to form on lakes. If you are a new cottager and plan to do winter activities please learn about your lakes winter conditions before you venture out. Ask neighbours or wait until the lake is staked by the snowmobile association. Different parts of the lake freeze at different rates and some spots do not freeze at all. Spring leak? More like summer saga. What started as a small leak quickly turned into a bigger problem: mice in the floor insulation and chewed wires. Definitely not something any island cottager wants to risk! 🐭⚡ A “small project” quickly became a summer-long mission. High insurance premiums reflect the reality: if a fire breaks out, crews likely won’t get there in time to save your cottage. That’s why island cottagers go to great lengths: fire pumps and hoses, annual fireplace maintenance, fireproofing, and keeping an eye out for critters who apparently think wiring is a snack. This is where working with local suppliers makes all the difference. Projects like this require multiple trades, garbage removal, and someone willing to coordinate and transport everyone. It’s no small feat. I can’t thank Big Red Works enough for their time, care, and thoughtfulness. Their slogan is “Let us take the work out of your weekend.” They did that, and then some! Huge thanks to Scott, Todd, Brian, Mitch, and the whole crew. 🙌 Now I can relax and go back to watching sunsets. No better feeling!
