Ta' Sopu Watchtower was funded by the University of Gozo and the construction took place in 1667 but it was unarmed until 1670. When Grandmaster Nicholas Cottoner visited Gozo he stressed the need to equip it with the necessary munitions, it was fully functional a year later. On the 10th of June 1798 the French Revolutionary troops led by Napoleon Bonaparte invaded the island of Gozo, landing within shooting distance this tower.
