Despite the undeniable accomplishments of female athletes worldwide, gender-biased media coverage STILL endures. When they do receive coverage, it's frequently accompanied by stereotypical (and stupid) questions. In the past three decades, a staggering 80% of top sports news shows ignored women's sports entirely. To add insult to injury, women's sports receive only 5% of media coverage. Seriously, the numbers are astounding – and not in a good way. Over the last three decades 80% of the top sports news shows had zero stories on women’s sports. And women’s sports receive only 5% of media coverage. But things are changing. For example, the WNBA postseason saw a 22% increase in viewership year over year. The 2023 Women’s #WorldCup is projected to be the best-attended and most-viewed women’s sporting event in history. During a late-night House Energy and Commerce committee hearing, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) @repaoc pushed back when Republicans ignored Medicaid coverage for people who miscarry unless employed. At 3 a.m., she argued no one should need a job to access Medicaid after miscarriage, a critical gap post-Dobbs. Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) tried to cut her off and steer her off camera, and Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) interrupted her and tried to cut her off. But AOC made it clear: she “will not yield to disrespectful men.” 👏
