DIY coving- how to cut the corners . When I shared a reel last week about saving money by cutting your own corners and not buying the expensive pre-cut ones, I had lots of messages asking for tips on how to know which angled cut worked for which corner piece. . Here’s a simple way to get it right first time and not waste lots of coving making mistakes (we’ve all been there!). . Some important notes: - this applies to the curved coving mitre boxes only as the coving goes in them as it would on the wall. The ceiling line is along the top which is the OPPOSITE way round to the flat mitre boxes that some people use. Don’t muddle the two up. . It makes sense if you think about it because in an internal corner the ceiling line is shorter than the base of the coving which goes further into the corner whereas on an external corner the ceiling line is longer as it comes out further than along the base of the coving. . I like to use a hard-backed tenon saw if possible as they don’t bend about which can affect the accuracy of the angled cut. . If your saw chews up the polystyrene coving edge a little don’t panic, just sand it and fill any gaps when you come to caulk. . Did this little video make sense? Coving tutorial 🔨🏠 for those of you who voted to see the coving tutorial here it is! We used the Sculptured Coving 165MM X 2.4M - 6 PACK from @screwfix_uk ✨ It’s super light weight and really easy to cut. If you don’t own a mitre saw, you can use a mitre block and the one I suggested in the video would work perfectly & it comes with the saw (Ryan checked the sizes) if you would like the link for it - comment “MITRE” below so I know to send it to you. 💫 Super Cove is a great option as it’s an adhesive and a filler so you don’t need to worry about buying two separate products. We painted the coving in @johnstonespaint Cova Plus Vinyl Matt Emulsion in Brilliant White. AD 🪄 Coving going up clean and staying up, that’s the goal every time. For this install I used EVO-STIK Sticks Like Sh*t Turbo Clear to bond the coving to the wall, one of the strongest grab adhesives out there, sets fast and holds firm. Then finished the edges with Bostik A80 Decorators Acrylic Caulk for that smooth, seamless finish that just looks the part.
