This is how std::weak_ptr can fix your reference cycles in C++. Circular references in C++ (with std::shared_ptr) can be fixed with the help of std::weak_ptr! A weak pointer can observe an object managed by a shared pointer, but it does not increment the object's strong reference count. This means an object is destroyed when all the shared pointers to it are destroyed or reset, even if a weak pointer still refers to it. It's useful in this scenario because by making one object have a weak_ptr to the other (instead of shared), the strong reference counts can reach 0 allowing the objects' proper destruction.
