🧬 check out this crab shedding its shell by way of a process called molting. Crabs have a hard exoskeleton that protects them like a suit of armor. As the crab grows the hard shell does not expand with it, so periodically the crab drops it’s old shell like a bad ex to develop a new and more fitting shell #science #crab #shell #skeleton #exoskeleton #molting Via @science

This fishing trip took a turn nobody was ready for. As the net comes up, fishermen realize they’ve pulled up something that does NOT look like a normal sea creature. Human-like features, massive crab legs, and an expression that feels way too aware make this one of the strangest ocean moments caught on camera. Whether it’s a deep-sea anomaly, a cryptid, or just the ocean being the ocean — this clip is impossible to forget. The sea stays undefeated. #SeaCreature #OceanMystery #DeepSea #ViralClip #ai

Some crabs are basically interior designers that grow their own living houses on their backs! The most famous example is the sponge crab (family Dromiidae). These little guys pick up a sea sponge (or sometimes a colonial tunicate that looks like a blob) with their back legs, cut it to fit perfectly on their shell like a custom hat, and carry it around as camouflage and protection. The sponge keeps growing while it’s being worn, so the crab periodically trims it like a bonsai gardener to keep the fit just right. But it gets even wilder: there’s a species called the decorator crab (like the ones in the genus Camposcia) that goes full arts-and-crafts mode. They use tiny hooked hairs on their shells like Velcro and glue bits of algae, sponges, anemones, or whatever’s around onto themselves. Some even “plant” living sea anemones that act like built-in boxing gloves: if a predator gets too close, the crab waves its pom-pom anemones and the stinging tentacles zap anything that touches them. So yeah… crabs invented wearable gardens and living weapons before humans even figured out clothes. Nature is metal. 🦀🌿

A crab’s claw strength can reach hundreds of times its own body weight. For example, the coconut crab (Birgus latro) the largest land-dwelling crab can pinch with a force of more than 1,700 newtons, almost as strong as the bite of a large dog! #crab #claw #animal #nature #endemic #australia #strongcrab #pain #animallovers
