Here’s a follow up to the Hard Ground prep reel I posted a few weeks ago. This reel moves through the steps of drawing, biting and proofing a copper etching plate with Hard Ground on it. This plate is for the collaboration I’m currently working on with @simiuscaelestibus , the most amazing letterpress/binding studio of all time…At least that’s my opinion. Can we share a secret? This is how we store our custom mixed etching and relief printing inks. Rolling ink up in these little saran wrap packages has been a game changer in the shop. We don’t remember when we switched to this method but prior to this we were wrapping ink up in wax paper. While the wax paper worked they always became really oily and gross to work with. This method stays super clean and we have ink last in these plastic wrap packages for years without drying out. This technique is one of the most effective methods in mechanical assembly. A bearing cooled in liquid nitrogen shrinks just enough to slide easily into a part that would normally be too tight. At-196°C, the extreme cold reduces the metal's size by micrometers, turning an interference fit into a slip fit. Once it warms back up, it expands and locks firmly in place-often tighter than hydraulic pressing. Called cryogenic shrink-fit assembly, it avoids heating, surface damage, and internal stress while giving higher precision and longer service life.It requires careful control of temperature and timing, especially with parts like generator rotors or engine shafts where even a 0.01 mm error can cause failure.
