Could you enjoy a sandwich and a tea ☕️ surrounded by gravestones? ☠️ If so, the Café in the Crypt, beneath St. Martin-in-the-Fields at Trafalgar Square, is the place. While a church has stood here since medieval times, Henry VIII rebuilt it in the 16th century to stop funeral processions from disrupting his palace. The current church was built in the 1720s, with the original burial ground holding up to 70,000 bodies—now where the National Gallery stands. By 1859, overcrowding forced the crypts to be cleared. It’s an atmospheric setting with dim lighting, stone pillars, a view of people walking above, and reasonable prices for central London. And the pastries and cakes looked to die for (lol).
