Shining, shimmering, splendid 🐟 🎥 from @chengruwang Misinformation spreads fast... You should all hopefully know by now that I mistakenly called this fish an oarfish when I first shared a video of it. That video then got millions and millions of views, and then many large accounts reposted the same video and copy/pasted my exact caption, causing many more millions of people to believe it's an oarfish (so many unoriginal accounts out there, it's crazy 😐). Make no mistake, this shiny soul is a species of ribbonfish, aka dealfish, from the family Trachipteridae, which are close relatives of the oarfish. It's called a Mediterranean dealfish (Trachipterus trachypterus), to be exact. It grows to 9' 10" (3 m) long, and typically lives about 650 - 3,300 ft (200 - 1,000 m) below the ocean surface (the midwater/mesopalegic zone), feeding on squids and other midwater fish. Seeing one this close to the ocean surface is probably not a good sign of its overall health, unfortunately. Much love, little buddy. One of the rarest fish in the world, and likely the source of many sea monster tales 🐉 🎥 from @chengruwang It's called an oarfish (Regalecus glesne), a deep sea fish that's typically only witnessed by humans after being washed up dead on shores. These scuba divers got a once-in-a-lifetime chance to not only see one alive, but were close enough to touch it (which I'm sure it didn't like, especially after already having to live with those gaping holes on its body, likely from a cookie cutter shark attack). The oarfish is the longest bony fish in the world that we know of, with the longest specimen being clocked in at 36 ft (11 m) long. It swims in a vertical position, with its head up and its tail down, and can move both horizontally and vertically. EDIT: THANKS TO @stinkbughatepage FOR THE CORRECTION ON THIS. THIS IS VERY LIKELY INSTEAD A TYPE OF RIBBONFISH (GENUS TRACHIPTERUS), WHICH ARE VERY CLOSE RELATIVES TO THE OAR FISH!
