Some of the mainstream tools that were released: GitHub Copilot (June 21 2022) – After a year‑long preview, Copilot officially launched and became available for $10/month or free for certain developers. It suggested entire lines or functions as you typed and, in files where it was enabled, it wrote nearly 40 % of the code. Replit Ghostwriter (first release was on Oct 2022) – Replit introduced Ghostwriter as an AI pair programmer. It offered inline completions, code explanations, transformations and the ability to generate code from scratch. Tabnine which was actually released in 2018 so it’s technically the pioneer of AI coding, but in 2022 it did raise $15.5 mln and launched models that could predict full lines and snippets of code. This year was only the start of the software world being changed forever.

OpenAI might be building its own GitHub competitor. According to The Information, OpenAI is reportedly developing an internal code repository platform after engineers got frustrated with repeated GitHub outages during infrastructure migrations. The idea started as an internal tool. But there’s talk it could eventually open to external developers. If that happens, the platform could integrate directly with OpenAI’s coding agents and models, potentially turning it into a full AI-native development environment. Here’s the twist. Microsoft owns GitHub… and is OpenAI’s biggest investor. Which means OpenAI could end up competing with a platform owned by the same company funding it.
