Daft Punk’s biggest anthem started with a piece of late-70s disco Their 2000 hit “One More Time” is built around a chopped sample of Eddie Johns’ 1979 track “More Spell on You.” The duo sliced small sections of the original brass riff, rearranged them into a new melody, and layered multiple fragments throughout the track. Heavy compression and EQ gave it that signature “pumping” French house sound that defined the Discovery era. Despite the sample being central to the song, Eddie Johns was not originally credited in the album liner notes. While Daft Punk’s camp says royalties have long been paid to the publishing company GM Musipro, Johns stated in 2021 that he personally never received payments.
