Yesterday I visited one of the biggest data centers in Europe! 🌍 Microsoft’s Dublin data center powers cloud services and AI services for businesses, governments and organisations across Ireland, the UK and much of Northern Europe. Hyperscale data centers like this one can host tens of thousands, and sometimes even hundreds of thousands of servers! What I found insane wasn’t actually the number of servers, it was the huge amount of infrastructure (power, cooling, etc) that helps to keep this data center running. The true cost of AI infrastructure extends far beyond data centers themselves. Atlanta is home to one of the largest data center campuses in the world- the QTS Atlanta-Metro campus on the Westside. As cloud and AI demand grows, the Atlanta Metro has become one of North America’s fastest-growing data center markets. The campus spans 99 acres — roughly 75 football fields, or about half the size of Piedmont Park and operates with its own dedicated Georgia Power substation to handle the load. Behind plain exterior walls sit rows of servers, industrial cooling systems, and dense fiber connections that keep cloud and enterprise systems running.
