Yesterday I visited one of the biggest data centers in Europe! 🌍 Microsoft’s Dublin data center powers cloud services and AI services for businesses, governments and organisations across Ireland, the UK and much of Northern Europe. Hyperscale data centers like this one can host tens of thousands, and sometimes even hundreds of thousands of servers! What I found insane wasn’t actually the number of servers, it was the huge amount of infrastructure (power, cooling, etc) that helps to keep this data center running. Residents in Vineland say construction of a 300-megawatt, 2.5 million square foot AI data center is driving them nuts, reporting a loud hum coming from the area where DataOne is building a data center under a contract with Microsoft. AI data center projects across New Jersey are under the microscope now for their heavy power and water use, which is driving up utility costs here and around the country.
