AI in Nigeria has the potential to drive growth, but it also risks deepening inequality. Access to AI tools and digital infrastructure remains concentrated in urban and affluent communities, while many rural and low-income populations are excluded. Bias in imported AI systems can disadvantage informal workers, women, and marginalized groups, especially in areas like credit, hiring, and surveillance. Without inclusive policies, local data, and widespread AI literacy, AI may reinforce existing social and economic gaps rather than reduce them. This initiative is conducted under the AI for CSOs Programme implemented by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) through the Nigeria AI Collective. The session sparked rich discussions, surfaced real-world experiences, and contributed to a framework aimed at making data more accessible and actionable.
