PSA Airlines (American Eagle) Flight 5342 & UH-60 Black Hawk 00-26860 Raw Crash Footage with ATC Recording • • 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗮𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝟱𝟯𝟰𝟮 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Wichita to Washington D.C., operated by a Bombardier CRJ700 (Reg. N709PS) on 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟵, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱. Flight 5342 departed Wichita at 17:38 local time and was scheduled to arrive in Washington D.C. at 21:03. Several passengers on Flight 5342 were U.S. Figure Skating athletes, personnel, and family members returning from a National Development Camp conducted in tandem with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita. At 20:48, while on final approach, the plane collided in mid-air with a U.S. Army Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk (Reg. 00-26860) helicopter. Less than 30 seconds before the collision, an air traffic controller asked the helicopter crew whether they had Flight 5342 in sight. A crew member replied that they could see the airliner, and requested "visual separation" from the plane; this was approved by the controllers. A few seconds before the collision, the air traffic controller ordered the helicopter to pass behind Flight 5342. The incident was captured by a webcam at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Another video shows a brief trail of fire. The accident occurred just southeast of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) as the regional jet was on its final approach to Runway 33. All 67 people aboard both aircraft were killed, making it the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster since 2001. A yearlong investigation by the NTSB, finalized in January 2026, determined the crash was caused by “deep, underlying systemic failures” rather than a single error. Key factors included the FAA’s flawed placement of a helicopter route directly beneath a busy commercial approach path and an over-reliance on the “see and avoid” concept.
