6 steps to create your first own DCF model ⬇️ 1. Start with a 3-statement operating model (P&L, cash flow, balance sheet — you’ll need EBIT, D&A, Capex and ΔNWC) 2. Calculate Unlevered Free Cash Flow EBIT × (1–t) + D&A – Capex ± ΔNWC 3. Project FCF for ~5 years based on your operating assumptions 4. Calculate WACC (weighted cost of equity + after-tax cost of debt) 5. Estimate Terminal Value (Gordon Growth or Exit Multiple) 6. This scene from Industry hits on two realities of high-performance finance roles: 1️⃣ Face time vs. actual performance “Be FILO — first in, last out.” That’s old-school Wall Street culture: • Show up before your boss • Leave after your boss • Be visibly working It signals commitment — especially early in your career. But here’s the truth: 💡 The better you are, the less face time matters. Top performers earn flexibility because they: • Generate revenue • Make smart decisions • Add undeniable value Until then, perception can matter almost as much as performance. 2️⃣ The reality of valuation in high-growth companies When they say: “DCF was coming out too low…” They’re highlighting a key investing concept. A Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) model values a company based on future cash flows. But for pre-profit “unicorns”, that often doesn’t work well. Why? Because: • There are little to no current profits • Cash flows are far in the future • Assumptions become highly sensitive So investors look at transaction comps instead: • What are similar companies being valued at? • Revenue multiples (8x, 9x, etc.) That’s why you hear: “These pre-profit unicorns trade on crazy multiples.” And the mention of a liquidity discount refers to the idea that: • Private companies are worth less than public ones • Because you can’t easily buy/sell shares 3️⃣ The darker side of the grind The mention that someone “dies on the job” in the episode isn’t just drama — it reflects the intense pressure and burnout risk in these environments. Long hours + constant stress = real consequences.
