Дебра Леви рођена је у Јужноафричкој Републици 1959. Њен отац, чији су родитељи дошли из Литваније и отворили рибарницу, био је члан Афричког националног конгреса. Завршио је у затвору кад јој је било пет година. Четири лета касније, преселили су се у Енглеску. Одрасла је у кући пуној књига о историји. Током осамдесетих и деведесетих, написала је двадесетак драма и постала важан драмски писац у Британији. Објављивала је поезију, романе, нефикцијско дело Ствари који не желим да знам (одговор пун варница на Орвелово Зашто пишем). У едицији Река објављени су њени романи Вруће млеко, Ка кући пливајући и Човек који је схватио све.
