If you recognized the red box on sight, this is for you: The Decimator MD-HX just got a HUGE buff. Now, you don’t have to have anything connected to it- you can run moving test patterns, send audio tones and overlay audio meters and graticules to troubleshoot straight from the unit itself. Not to mention more scaling options! It just went from ‘great’ to ‘by far the best video multitool at its price point’. I somehow missed this in the NAB news onslaught but gave it a go today. Just download the USB control panel from the Decimator website, connect via usb and update firmware. Will you give it a try?

Need a test pattern at the ready? Decimator released their new 3.0.5 update with a TPG (Test Pattern Generator)built into their amazing scaler! To get it going, download their latest USB control panel software, version 3.0.5. Plug plug-in a USB from your computer to the Decimator, you’ll be prompted to update your firmware. Update your device to the latest version. Once updated, there’s a couple settings. You need to select to ensure it works. Main thing, set your scaler input to HDMI in! When you try to do SDI into the scaler, it does not want to output the test pattern generator out of SDI. Second, go to your scaler options and make sure the tester generator is turned on. If you just need to scale something make sure it is turned off otherwise you will get test patterns on your screen that you’re trying to output to. Lastly, you can now cycle through all the new test patterns!
