Four Indigenous artists from Manitoba are in the spotlight this month in the Kah-beh Nahgamowaat live performance video series! Our first video features @ericlavoiemusic performing “This is My Home”… watch TODAY at 12 PM CT via @manitobamusic’s YouTube! Eric Lavoie’s music is rooted in a commitment to honest storytelling. With courage and sincerity, he shares songs about struggle, perseverance, triumph, and truth, whether the stories are uplifting or heavy. Born and raised in Winnipeg, on Treaty No. 1 Territory, Eric started playing piano as a child and picked up the guitar at fourteen; the same age he learned of his Métis heritage. This discovery sparked a journey of learning about his ancestry, the history of the land, and the stories that shape both. Blending elements of folk, country, blues, and psychedelia, Eric strives to create songs that feel true to himself. He aims to give the melodies and stories the space they need to come alive. Above all, Eric hopes his music can contribute to positive change, offering listeners a chance to reflect, connect, and find meaning. Todays release: Unmoored (MANCHO 06/50) I wrote this in a moment of hopelessness fueled by the misuse of power of people in positions of authority. This piece became a way to process that feeling: the disorientation, the injustice, and the quiet resolve to remain grounded in truth. I love groupings of 5 because they feel unsettled. I initially composed a chord progression based on this then later added the Nord Drum beat in 10/8 (borrowed from Sufi music of Ottoman-Turkish descent) I’m incredibly proud of how this one came together — especially the final arrangement and mix. It feels steady now in a way I wasn’t when I first wrote it. Music has a way of saying what words can’t. A proud member of the Misipawistik Cree Nation, Jade Turner was raised in Northern Manitoba, with an upbringing rooted in the art of storytelling. Her lyrics tell personal tales that range from serious topics to satirical ones, delivered with dynamic vocals that span from gritty and raw to spirited and energetic. In 2025, Jade was honored with the Western Canadian Music Award for Country Artist of the Year, and in 2024, she was a semi-finalist in Sirius XM’s Top of the Country competition. She also received the Manitoba Music Kevin Walters Songwriter Award, the SOCAN Vince Fontaine Indigenous Song Award, and the Manitoba Country Music Award for Song of the Year. Early in 2025, Jade released her full-length album “Breathe”. I released The Tide in 2017 as a collection of protest songs written in response to a world that felt overwhelming and divided. Today I’m sharing “The Tide,” the title track from the EP. It’s 2026, and these songs are still extremely relevant.
