Gauge 101: Your Questions Answered! A gauge swatch (or tension square) is your best friend when knitting sweaters. Here’s what you need to know: 1️⃣ How big should it be? Around 6” / 15 cm square, this avoids edge stitches that can be uneven. 2️⃣ Should I block it? Yes! Always treat your swatch the same way you’ll treat your finished garment. 3️⃣ How do I measure? Shake it out, let it rest for a day or two. Measure stitches and rows in several spots, avoiding any obviously tight or loose areas. Take the average for the most accurate gauge. 4️⃣ My swatch isn’t the right size. What now? If the fabric feels good, you might just adjust the pattern size. If you want to match the gauge, try different needle sizes or even different needle materials. Swatching is a small step that makes a huge difference in how your sweater fits! 👉 If you’d like to learn more about knitting sweaters that fit beautifully, comment ‘MORE’, and I’ll send you my favourite tutorials to get you started. #sweaterknitting #knittingmyth #knittersofinstagram #knitters #knitting

I honestly would have frogged a few rows if I knew adjusting this would help so much! . . . . #yarn #knit #knittersgonnaknit #yarnofinstagram

Here’s what actually improves your knitting 👇 The Right Lifted Increase (RLI) is an increase method known since the late 19th–early 20th century A new stitch is created by lifting a stitch from the row below and knitting into it, resulting in a clean, right-leaning increase This method turns one stitch into two while remaining almost invisible in the fabric, making it ideal when you want structure without visual noise There is no single author credited with this technique, but it was widely popularized by influential knitters such as Elizabeth Zimmermann The counterpart, the Left Lifted Increase (LLI), is worked by lifting the stitch from the row below the previously worked stitch, creating a left-leaning increase that mirrors the RLI. Have you ever used this increase?

When working a top down circular yoke sweater, there comes a point where you divide for sleeves before continuing to finish the torso and sleeves separately. At this point you’ll often see the instruction to cast on stitches for underarm. This is where it’s helpful to know the backwards loop cast on technique! #swearerknitting #circularyokesweater #backwardsloopcaston #knittingtutorial #madelinetoshyarn

A great technique from @pattyjlyons to help you in your knitting. This one could be a game changer. BOOKMARK IT - AHHH I forgot a decrease. Not going to lie - this happens to me all the time when doing sweater shaping. I put in my decrease as the start of the row, but by the time I’m at the end of the row, I forget. NOW, to avoid that, I use a vertical marking thread at the start of the row, put in my decrease, and then immediately put in a locking stitch marker at the end of the row where I’m supposed ot put in the decrease. This wakes me up. But . . . there are times when you buzz right past a decrease. No stress, just drop and pop! Drop down and pop in the fix.

Swatching in the round by knitting into the loop. Using a circular needle or a long dpn: 1. Knit a row using yarn attached to the ball. 2. At the end of the row, estimate length of yarn needed to work next row by tripling the width of the swatch, plus a bit. Pinch to hold your place. 3. Slide swatch back to the working end of the needle. 4. Knit first stitch of the row at the pinch point, then finish the row using yarn in the loop attached to the swatch; the ball yarn remains at the beginning of the row. 5. Slide stitches again to the working end of the needle. 6. Repeat from step 1. . . #knittingtips #swatching
