Before I got the chance to work with Deee-lite way back in ‘93, I was just a fan. So when I found out about “the very best of Deee-lite” compilation that was dropping on vinyl this past Black Friday on @rhino_records, I had to go by @djrockandsoul on 49 West 37th street to scoop up a couple of copies for myself… just like I would have when I was a teenager. Huge shout out to @djmoneymikenyc for holding them for me. There might be some copies left at the store, so swing by Rock & Soul. They’re a mom & pop shop that’s been serving DJs and record collectors since the 1970s with an incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff and vinyl for days… Equipment too. They have it all. #deeelite And of course… Massive ups to @theladymisskier @superdjdmitry & #towatei for all the magic they’ve created; music that still seems to be holding up after all these decades. Deee-Lite’s ‘Groove Is in the Heart’ turns 35 this year 🌼 Released in August 1990 on Elektra Records, the single is taken from the New York group’s debut album ‘World Clique’, with an iconic bassline lifted from Herbie Hancock’s ‘Bring Down the Birds’, a guest appearance from Parliament Funkadelic’s Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, and a verse from A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-tip. The song reached No. 1 in Australia, No. 2 in the UK, and No. 4 in the US. The trio, comprising Lady Miss Kier, DJ Dmitry and Towa Tei, found delights on New York City’s dancefloors, and fed it back into their de-gorgeous mix of funk, pop and disco, all wrapped up in a hip-hop bow. “We formed Deee-lite just as the musical flames of house music and hip-hop were blazing,” Lady Miss Kier told DJ Mag in 2020. “Even with these two forces, we were also absorbing ’60s and ’70s jazz and funk, ’70s and ’80s electronic music, and ’60s acid rock. I consider myself a musical intern for life.” When the track hit its 30th anniversary, DJ Mag caught up with the band to revisit this enduring track, still found wedding playlists, “best of the ’90s” lists. and late-night dancefloors around the world.
