The same bill also mandates diversity programs on college campuses, requiring universities to host events with "differing viewpoints." In a faculty meeting today, as we discussed policies for incoming graduate enrollment under our current US administration, the conversation turned to the volume of prospective students (home grown artists, with visas, without visas, countries of origin etc.), interviews, and hours absorbed by the Sculpture faculty. I found myself casually crunching numbers, trying to make sense of fairly straightforward (albeit political) math. “If we interview this many students, what percentage yield is commonly expected for acceptance”. Truth is — we’re in new territory. Truth is — I’ve always been strong with numbers, and I’ll admit I sometimes struggle to slow down when arithmetic feels intuitive. At times, I reduce complex situations—feelings included—into numerical problems as a way of understanding them. That tendency is precisely why I found this video so clarifying. It carefully lays out the actual percentages surrounding immigration, rather than the distorted figures that circulate so easily in political discourse. Policies targeting undocumented people are not abstract; they are measurably reshaping higher education enrollment, quietly but profoundly as a significant amount of foreign students, would be visa holders, gave also been targeted. When we misunderstand or misuse these statistics, we drift toward a dangerous place—one where fear replaces fact, and policy is guided by fantasy rather than reality. In an increasingly volatile political climate, I am learning the necessity of being nimble without being careless. We must hold multiple truths at once: consider the numbers —and also consider people as human beings; consider land that remains occupied by colonizers/squatters rewriting history through fear; consider the numbers/reality again.
