Most people know what a load balancer is. Very few understand where it actually sits in the system. Let’s start from first principles. In the OSI model: Layer 4 → Transport Layer (TCP / UDP) Layer 7 → Application Layer (HTTP / HTTPS) That single distinction defines everything. ⸻ 🔹 Layer 4 Load Balancer L4 operates at the transport layer. It only cares about: IP address and port number. It does not understand HTTP. It does not see URLs, headers, cookies, or request body. From L4’s point of view, traffic is just a stream of packets. Because of this, L4 is extremely fast and lightweight. I prefer L4 when: • I need maximum performance • I’m handling very high traffic volume • I just want to distribute network connections Typical example: infrastructure-level traffic distribution. ⸻ 🔹 Layer 7 Load Balancer L7 operates at the application layer. It understands HTTP and HTTPS. It can inspect: URL paths, headers, cookies, and request body. This allows intelligent routing. For example: /api → backend service /images → image service (S3 / Cloudinary) This is why L7 is heavily used in microservices architectures. Different services, different routes, same entry point. I prefer L7 when: • I need content-based routing • I’m building microservices • I need advanced traffic rules ⸻ My practical rule of thumb: If you need raw performance → choose L4 If you need smart routing → choose L7 Both are tools.
