As I grew in my walk with God, the Holy Spirit began to nudge me in this area of modesty. Not because I needed to “cover up” to be loved, but because I was already so deeply loved, and I wanted to honor that love. Here are a few things I let go of: ➡️ Tight Leggings (especially when worn without covering my backside) They left nothing to the imagination. I mean you could see every crevice and crease😭 And I realized I didn’t want to keep drawing attention to my body when my heart desired to draw people to God. I still love comfort—but I’ll layer with longer tops or opt for looser fits. ➡️ Crop Tops I used to wear these all the time without a second thought. But I started asking: Why do I feel the need to show my entire stomach? What message am I sending? For me, it became about humility and shifting my focus from self-expression to spiritual submission. ➡️ String bikinis This was a big one for me. Because how am I supposed to go to the beach and get in the water without a swimsuit on? This one actually hit me right before Brazil, while shopping for swimsuits to wear. I found some super cute options that still provided coverage and it made me feel so comfortable and confident. ➡️ Short Shorts I had to be honest with myself—these were never about comfort, they were about attention. Dressing for the male gaze (because honestly they were pretty uncomfortable…) God showed me that my value doesn’t come from turning heads, but from a confidence in who I am in Him. This isn’t about rules, it’s about reverence. It’s not about shame, it’s about stewardship. And it’s definitely not about judging others…it’s just me honoring what He asked of me. If you’ve ever felt God tugging on your heart in this area, know this: modesty isn’t about hiding your beauty, it’s about revealing Who you belong to. There are plenty of options that still leave room for femininity and personality, that don’t involve showing the world every part of your body. In Islam, both the Qur’an and authentic hadith clearly teach modesty and maintaining the natural distinction between men and women. Allah commands in Qur'an Surah An-Nur that believing men should lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and believing women should also do the same while not displaying their beauty except what is apparent and drawing their veils over their chests. Another verse in Qur'an Surah Al-Ahzab instructs women to wear outer garments (jilbab) so they are recognized as modest and protected. We have been taught modesty from an outside/in point of view and not from a place of understanding that TRUE modesty is an INWARD virtue stemming from the beauty of humility that is rarely discussed in churches. When the Lord showed me that pride/insecurity was at the root of my vanity, everything changed. My fear (insecurity) of being invisible manifested in my need to be seen (pride) which then translated to (immodesty) in how I adorned my body. When we tell women to “cover up” without addressing the HEART, we run the risk of creating appearance modification without a change of the heart. One thing I know, is that when the heart changes the clothing follows suit.
