Dendrites are impossible to find on purpose. You can’t hunt or search for good ones, you have to get lucky. Even then, discovering richly developed branching and contrast like this is like unlocking a holy grail level in the mineral world Dendrites are usually iron oxide or manganese, and form along microscopic fractures or surfaces within the host material. They grow in organic, branching structures that resemble lightning bolts, frost patterns on glass and river systems seen from above - one of natures most breathtaking pattern archetypes that reminds us ‘as above, so below’. As a collector of dendritic quartz myself, this fluorite piece is a rare fluke that really tested me. I’ve sat with it and honestly, I’m still not sure I’m making the right call. But with our home renovations and new mineral gallery build still underway, it’s not the right time. It belongs with someone who can give it the home it deserves right now. Save this post. Tag someone who needs to see it. Pieces like this don’t come twice ⚡️ #dendrite #dendrites #fluorite #fluoritecrystal #mineralcollector

Today I Went Rockhounding for Dendritic Opal Seams in the California Central Valley. Got into some nice material, a mix of colors and varieties. Gonna share more details and videos from the dig throughout the next few days. I left to road-trip to the dig at 4:30am and just got home at 11pm, pretty wiped out but couldn’t get myself to stop digging.🤣⛏ . . . #dendritic #dendrtiticopal #rockhound #rockhounding #geology #rockhounds #geologia #geologist #dendrites #green #lapidary #gems #gemstones #lapidaryrough #california #rockhoundingcalifornia

Synaptic turnover in the spine 🧠 The synapses that form the connections between neurons in our brains are always changing. This is known as ‘synaptic turnover’, and allows us to continuously acquire information and store it in the form of memory. However, despite these changes to the “communication bridges” in our brain, its function remains largely the same. Scientists in this study sought to explore how the brain manages to maintain its stability and information retention in the face of synaptic turnover. Specifically, the team developed a model to examine local synaptic turnover, or plasticity, by studying spontaneously evolving spines and observing the effects of stimulation on synapses. They found that stimulation led to a significant shift in the network, improving its ability to carry information – this effect, however, was short-lived. The team suggests that synaptic fluctuations and randomness, such as those exhibited by the spine, give our brains a cost-effective method of freeing up space by degrading the memories and skills we don’t use. This research was published in Communications Biology. Maximilian Eggl and Tatjana Chumatchenko explain more in the Neuroscience Community.
