#Design Engineer

Just because I call myself an indie maker doesn’t make me a good one. What does? Iteration (planning, building piece by piece, refining with intention), taste (executing on a clear and scoped vision, not just vibes), and actually testing before you move on instead of patching it after the fact. I used to run user tests off clickable prototypes, then hand off designs when they felt ready. But while waiting, I would immediately move to the next UX design challenge. By the time the feature was really usable, going back and fixing it felt like the opposite of progress. We are all moving faster than ever and so we have more ability than ever! The label “design engineer” or “indie builder” means nothing. The process is everything.

You would be suprised at how much analysis, testing and work goes into something that could put people at risk and as a design engineer, you would be the one in charge of making sure that your product works properly. This is why there are many tasks involved and not all of them might be as fun. However, seeing your product on store shelves can be super rewarding. These are just some of the things I do as a design engineer: 👩🏻‍💼Stay up to date with standards, regulations, and product testing requirements to ensure we meet all of them when creating a new design. 👩🏻‍💼Own a project from idea to final design. Brainstorm mechanical components and work with drafters to create 3D models. 👩🏻‍💼Create and update design for failure analysis to ensure products are safe and risks are accounted for. Design reviews with team and managers 👩🏻‍💼Customer visits to understand needs and get feedback on current prototypes or to understand what the market needs. 👩🏻‍💼Build prototypes to validate designs. 👩🏻‍💼Guide manufacturing during first builds and obtain design feedback. 👩🏻‍💼Tolerance stacks to ensure all components will fit properly during mass production. Activities and workload depend on the complexity of the project, how many projects, and where in the design process we are in.
