One thing I’ve really had to learn this winter as my weekly KMs go up as I train for the Tamarack Ottawa Half Marathon presented by @desjardinsgroup at the @ottawaracewknd is how to actually dress for the weather. There are always those days where I’m standing at the door thinking, “Am I warm enough?” or “Should I wear this or that?” And honestly, those hit‑or‑miss days are the ones that teach me the most. They can feel chaotic in the moment, but they’re also super valuable when you’re still learning your body as a long‑distance runner. And then there’s fuelling. Yes — I fuel during 8K runs, and I’m not ashamed of it. I’d rather feel good in my body than finish every run on the edge of collapsing. One of the biggest game‑changers for me has been eating properly before and after workouts. I also learned that electrolytes are a must for me, especially the night before a long run. Even in the winter, when it’s cold and you think you don’t need as much hydration, you absolutely do. Your body still burns through energy, still sweats under layers, and still needs fuel before, during, and after your runs. Another thing I’ve learned is that winter running is basically a science experiment with your own comfort. Some days you overdress, some days you underdress, and some days you nail it without even trying. But every single run teaches you something — about your gear, your body, your pacing, or even your mindset. And that’s part of what makes winter training so rewarding.
