When I’m building a future operational detection dog, there are a few things that are non-negotiable. Sensitivity in these areas will limit your dog in real-world deployments so we train for confidence early and often. 5 things I DON’T want my dog to be sensitive to: • Escalators — unstable, noisy, moving surfaces shouldn’t stop your dog from working. • Slippery floors — malls, airports, hotels… your dog needs to move with confidence anywhere. • Food in search areas — distractions are everywhere, and ignoring them is part of the job. • Working around other dogs — neutrality is key. This isn’t playtime, it’s work. • Leash pressure — your dog should understand and work through pressure, not shut down from it. A dog that can’t handle these environments isn’t ready for real deployment. We don’t avoid these challenges we train through them. If you clean your tank with Ethanol let them DRY and lose the smell to 100% fully first before use them! . We took the next step with Athena on her „Education“ to EDD - Explosive Detection Dog - . The Smell she is imprinting first is „DBSP-D“ … coming up are TNT, C4, Semtex, TATP etc . The next step in our education of Athena was to rise up the level and become a lil challenging for her . We are now using glass tanks to make sure there is less „other smells“ than the Odor Print . To figure out if the dog do understand what he should show -> and that is not the tank , but the Smell of the odor Print <- for that we used two identical tanks next to each other . During the training for detection of explosives, you have to pay attention on a calm and concentrated pointing of the dog on the object . Rewarding and playing is going to be right away next to the handler after the release command! Till then the dog has to point and stay next the found object . Odor is made of tiny molecules—and some can drift into the air even when packaging looks closed. And here’s the part most people miss: touch transfer is real. Hands and surfaces can leave invisible residue on the outside of a bag. Plus, plastic and seams are not perfect barriers. Scent can slip out in micro-gaps… then air currents carry it like rivers. I follow the strongest stream, and when I’m sure, I alert. That’s how I spot danger early—before it can hurt anyone. When you see (and hear) a conservation canine like JJ doing this, you’re watching a masterclass in scent processing in action. 👃🐾 What you’re hearing isn’t just a dog sniffing - it’s JJ entering a target-locked state and his rapid sniffing means high olfactory focus. 🎯 Dogs shift into this pattern when an odor becomes salient, meaning it stands out as relevant or valuable. It’s often associated with target odors or scents tied to high motivation or reward. 🎁 When a dog rapidly sniffs, they temporarily block off the normal respiratory pathway and funnel incoming air exclusively through their olfactory tract, a dedicated scent-processing channel lined with millions of odor receptors. It’s like switching from “breathing mode” to “analyze this immediately” mode. 🔬 That final “purge” you hear afterward is JJ clearing his olfactory system. Because all of that air went through his scent-processing machinery it has to be expelled separately through the nose. This shift in sniffing pattern isn’t just cool 😎, it’s behaviorally meaningful. This is one of the changes in behavior that our handlers interpret when the dog is in an active decision-making process. It's a very clear, real-time cue that the dog is close to odor source or picking up something important.
