The Kovalam–Bekal West Coast Canal Development, a flagship State Waterway initiative of the Government of Kerala, is entering a defining phase with the completion of its phase 1 developmental activities. Led by Kerala Waterways and Infrastructures Limited (KWIL) — a special purpose organization constituted by the Government of Kerala and CIAL, the project has revitalised canals through dredging, bridge construction, modern boat jetties, and large-scale rehabilitation, ensuring improved living conditions for hundreds of families. 1. Aakkulam – Chettuva Waterway: Phase 1 The renovation works of the 280-km canal stretch from Aakkulam in Thiruvananthapuram district to Chettuva in Thrissur district have been completed. As part of the project, the depth and width have been increased over a 5-km stretch at Madhurampally upgrading it to State Waterway standards. Construction of three boat jetties at Thriprayar, Kandassham Kadavu, and Enamavu has also commenced. Dredging activities are progressing in the northern area of the Shivagiri tunnel. 2. Chilakkoor Tourism Project Phase 1 beautification of the Varkala Arivalam–Thottilpalam stretch, has been completed. The 320-metre-long historic Chilakkoor Tunnel, built in 1880, has been restored to navigable condition and enhanced with a ₹4.5 crore 3D Light & Sound show, carefully designed without disturbing its original structure. A specially designed 20-seater electric boat equipped with laser projection and advanced sound systems offers visitors an eco-friendly immersive experience, showcasing Kerala’s history, culture, and the life & teachings of Sree Narayana Guru. The project is being implemented through CIAL. 3. Inland Navigation Waterway Projects Projects initiated and implemented by the Inland Navigation Department—including the Moozhikkal Lock-cum-Bridge in Kozhikode, St. Andrews Bridge in Thiruvananthapuram, and the 14-km Vadakara–Mahe Canal stretch—are now operational, all completed to National Waterway standards. EKA | Official Inauguration A historic waterway moves again. On 26 February at Chilakoor Beach Park, Navalt’s purpose-built electric heritage vessel EKA was officially inaugurated by the Honorable Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan. Once a trade artery under the Kingdom of Travancore, the Varkala Tunnel now enters a new chapter, reimagined for immersive canal tourism. Designed and built by Navalt, with an electric powertrain engineered by Greenship, EKA is not a retrofit. It is engineered specifically for enclosed, heritage-sensitive waterways. Inside a 19th-century tunnel, emissions are unacceptable. EKA delivers: • Zero operational emissions • Near-silent navigation • Minimal wake • Independent propulsion and projection battery systems • IRS class compliance Powered by a dedicated 32.25 kWh Manta DNV-approved auxiliary LFP battery for its onboard light-and-sound experience, EKA combines clean engineering with cultural storytelling. From coir transport to laser projections. From trade corridor to cultural corridor. Same tunnel. New current. #EKA #Navalt #ElectricBoat #SustainableMobility #HeritageTourism #ZeroEmission #InlandWaterways #MarineInnovation
