A rare black seadevil anglerfish, usually found between 650 and 6,500 feet deep, was spotted swimming near the surface off the Canary Islands. The sighting, possibly the first of its kind, was made by Spanish NGO Condrik Tenerife and marine life photographer David Jara Boguna. The female fish, known for its bioluminescent lure and sharp teeth, was likely sick or escaping a predator. Despite being observed for hours, it died shortly after being filmed. In the abyss, light is bait. The humpback anglerfish, Melanocetus johnsonii, survives in one of the harshest environments on Earth — where sunlight never reaches and food is scarce. Its bioluminescent lure isn’t decoration. It’s a living fishing rod. The glow comes from symbiotic bacteria housed inside the esca. By controlling exposure, the anglerfish can pulse or dim the light to mimic small prey. Curious animals drift closer — and in the deep sea, curiosity can be fatal. What makes the strike extraordinary isn’t speed alone, but suction. When the anglerfish opens its mouth, it rapidly expands its buccal cavity, creating a pressure difference that pulls water — and prey — inward before escape is possible. Teeth curve inward, preventing retreat. The barrel amphipod, Phronima sedentaria, is itself a remarkable creature. It hollows out gelatinous salps and uses them as floating shelters. But even engineering can’t stop physics. At 3,200 meters, energy is rare. Every successful ambush matters.
