Known for his groundbreaking media works and public installations, Turkish artist @RefikAnadol has created digital artworks that unfold in real time, continuously generating new and otherworldly forms that envelop viewers in a large-scale installation. Unsupervised is a meditation on technology, creativity, and modern art. Anadol trained a sophisticated machine-learning model to interpret the publicly available data of MoMA’s collection. As the model “walks” through its conception of this vast range of works, it reimagines the history of modern art and dreams about what might have been—and what might be to come. In turn, Anadol incorporates site-specific input from the environment of the Museum’s Gund Lobby—changes in light, movement, acoustics, and the weather outside—to affect the continuously shifting imagery and sound. AI is often used to classify, process, and generate realistic representations of the world. In contrast, Unsupervised is visionary: it explores fantasy, hallucination, and irrationality, creating an alternate understanding of art-making itself. Beam Drop What happens when an artist drops steel from the sky? That is the question artist Chris Burden was interested in when he dropped steel beams from near 150 feet above ground into a pool of wet cement. In a series titled Beam Drop”, the artist explores the physical and formal possibilities of kineticism, dynamism, and aestheticism. The resulting sculpture would be a product of the artist’s partial control of the process, in combination with the inherent randomness and violence caused by the clashing of steel beams. One of the most ambitious and unrealized iterations of the Beam Drop series was proposed for entrepreneur and collector Michael Ovitz’s art gallery in Los Angeles. It involved dropping three steel beams from a towering crane into the gallery, penetrating the ceiling and creating a fusion of Burden’s artwork and existing architecture. Due to construction setbacks, this Beam Drop project was eventually scrapped, and remains one of the most remarkable unrealized concepts in Burden’s artistic journey.
