Saw mucus plug during a washroom visit? 😳 Take a deep breath and read this first 🤍 Seeing a mucus plug can suddenly make you panic — “Am I dilating?” “Is labour starting?” “Is something wrong?” ✨ What it actually means: The mucus plug is a thick, jelly-like discharge that protects your baby by sealing the cervix during pregnancy. When you see it, it usually means your body is slowly preparing for labour. ❌ It does NOT always mean labour will start immediately. Many women go into labour after days or even weeks. ✨ Am I dilating? There may be mild cervical changes, but dilation cannot be confirmed just by seeing the mucus plug. ✅ What should you do now? • Stay calm • Observe the color and amount • Continue your routine if you feel comfortable • Practice deep breathing & relaxation • Trust your body’s natural process 🤍 🚨 Contact your doctor immediately if: • You see bright red bleeding • You have regular, painful contractions • Your water breaks • Baby movements feel reduced • You are less than 37 weeks pregnant 🌸 Remember: Every body is different. Details on the hospitalization 🏥 - For vasa previa, the management plan typically includes being hospitalized for several weeks leading up to a scheduled c section. This is because your body can start to prepare for labor by dilating, contracting, etc. Most people would be perfectly safe when this happens and it’s just a nice way for your body to start to learn! However, the exposed fetal blood vessels with VP (supposed to be in the umbilical cord but aren’t) can rupture when that happens. If the vessels rupture, the baby needs to be born via c section IMMEDIATELY. Within a few minutes of any bleeding. So the hospitalization allows me to safely be about 50 ft from an operating room if that were to happen. The goal is that nothing does happen and I just have a scheduled c section at 35 weeks. The baby also has to come early to avoid the risk of going into labor naturally for the same reasons explained.

Story Time 💌 So the laboring mom had made it all the way to 8cm dilated... and then stopped. She was contracting on her own, but not dilating further. A quick reminder: To push, the cervix has to reach 10 cm dilated. The baby was barely tolerating position changes and the heartrate wasn't responding well to her spontaneous contractions. Normally, to get past a certain dilation, we will augment or increase the intensity of contractions with Pitocin. This baby wasn't even loving labor without medication. Adding Pitocin wasn't an option. Hour after hour, no further dilation. I started to become concerned that baby wasn't coming out and that I didn't have any more tricks up my sleeve to encourage baby to move down through the birth canal. In comes seasoned Labor and Delivery nurse, Kathy, to the rescue. The patients nurse and I were lamenting at the nurses station and Kathy was like, "Why don't you try Fire Hydrant?" We were both like, "What's that?" I even added, "Did you just make that up?" She laughed at me but described it. We agreed to try it. What did we have to lose? The patients nurse went to work. She got her in the position and encouraged her to rock her pelvis back and forth during contractions. Something incredible happened. Her baby, who had not tolerated hands and knees before that, starting looking better on the monitor. We were able to add a whiff of Pitocin to the mix. In about two hours, she went from being stuck at 8 cm for over 5 hours, to making it to 9cm. Then in another hour or so, she was 10cm and was able to push. I'm a new convert. If I hear one more provider say that every birthing person should be dilating 1cm per hour after 6cm I’m going to…lose it. Let’s throw away outdated data and stop trying to get birth to fit into a box! Birth is a non-linear experience that happens outside of time and our logical brain. Let’s start treating it that way. 🌀

Update on Arianna. A week ago I mentioned she’d be having her baby, but not so fast! Arianna was sent home after dilating 1 cm. Now we wait for Baby Kirsten! Could be any day!
