Using AI to imagine alternate worlds🪞collab w/ 🍃@michaelcarychao 🦾 @sagansagansagans I've seen some really cool Disco Diffusion art lately on IG, and I thought it would be an interesting twist to imagine it with "windows" overlayed onto the real world, inspired by @dm.vrg @sagansagansagans generated the "robot" side and @michaelcarychao generated the "nature" side Disco Diffusion is an AI technique that sort of looks like a filter on steroids. You describe what you want with text, wait a few hours, then it applies the style to your footage. If you're interested in trying it, you can google "disco diffusion tutorial youtube" One challenge with Diffusion (and with many generative AI art tools) is that you can't fully control it. I've heard artists describe watercolor in this way - you can guide it, but the water takes a mind of its own. AI generative art is similar. It's unpredictable - it has a mind of its own. Which means you can't just tweak a small thing here or there - every small change you make has a butterfly effect throughout the piece. Process: (see more in stories) 1) First I used Adobe Aero to create a quick AR filter that was simply two blank white frames. I placed those in space and @austingumban filmed me dancing a different style through each window - Then @michaelcarychao and @sagansagansagans worked on one window each and their process was: 2) Rotoscope the dancer from the background. Without this step, Disco Diffusion tended to muddy the subject with the background, and we wanted a clean separation 3) Run the background through Disco Diffusion 4) Run the dancer through Disco Diffusion 5) Repeat steps 3 & 4 many times with many different prompts until we get a look we're happy with 6) Manually make finishing touches/tweaks on specific elements like facial features and shadows, and then re-run through Diffusion 7) Finally, @stanleygurvich scored a custom music track for this and @maddchadd added the robot sound effects Director @karenxcheng Nature world @michaelcarychao Robot world @sagansagansagans Shot by @austingumban Music @stanleygurvich - "Diffusion" Robot SFX @maddchadd #discodiffusion #generativeart #aiart #dance

Italo disco originated in Italy. It was popular in late 1970s to the late 1980s.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ The genre uses drum machines, synthesizers, and occasionally you’ll hear a vocoder.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Italo disco's influences include singers like Sylvester, producers like Italian producer Giorgio Moroder, French musician Didier Marouani, French drummer and composer Cerrone, and San Francisco producer Patrick Cowley.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ In America in the 1980s, people started shying away from listening to disco music. In Europe, however, dance music was still popular. Because imports were so expensive - and DJs wanted something new - Italian producers and musicians filled the void with their own new music.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Italo disco themes often deal with space, love and fantasy.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ According to an article via The Guardian:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ ⁣ [The term Italo-disco wasn't coined until around 1985, when a German called Bernhard Mikulski, who ran the ZYX label, decided there should be a name to market this type of music.] ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ And an article from Pitchfork gives a good description of the genre: ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ [Italo was an Italian take on electro and synth-pop, using many of the same electronic sounds and drum machine patterns, but usually a lot more over the top.
