“Gravity always wins” Here’s a mix of comic art, music theory, and an amazing song by @radiohead . “Fake Plastic Trees” is a song that is so full of feeling, but the lyrics are wonderfully ambiguous and hazy...and I thought it would be fun to unpack the narrative through a few elements of the melody and one particularly mysterious chord in the song. First, the most striking part of the melody to me is the ascent and octave drop at the end of each verse line—and very often it is paired with or in close proximity to a lyric that’s directional, illustrating the story through melody. Every story thread in the song becomes a version of “gravity always wins.” Second, the second chord of the song, Dmaj9/F#, is what I call a “confused” chord: it strongly sounds like an F# minor chord thanks to that bass note and the fact that it has an F# minor triad in it, but the inclusion of that D in the chord actually makes it a major chord. It goes by so fast and it’s so gorgeous that you might miss it, but I think it’s no coincidence that the lyrics that accompany this chord almost always refer to an artificial representation of reality: fake Chinese rubber plant, rubber man, cracked polystyrene man, used to do surgery, she tastes like the real thing. This is one of the major threads of this song, this feeling of questioning reality, this feeling that everything in your life is false. Third, the ending of the three choruses shows how each character deals with the rawness of being worn out, the rawness of the passage of time: the woman is resigned to keep going, the surgeon is rageful, and the narrator’s phrase actually properly ends. Finally, what to make of that coda? To me, the whole story of the song is happening inside of the narrator’s head, which you see in my illustration taken as a whole, as he watches the object of his desire from afar. #radiohead #fakeplastictrees
