We’re making history this Friday at the Canadian premiere of the MuchMusic documentary “299 Queen Street West” when it’s screened at @roythomsonhall. In keeping with the scrappy MuchMusic DIY ethos, the brilliant and bold young producer/director of the film, @SeanMenard is the very first independent filmmaker to ever rent out RTH to showcase their film. When TIFF never responded to his request to be a part of the festival despite a previous hit with The Carter Effect, he did what no one has done before. He mortgaged his house and personally rented out Roy Thomson Hall for a gala interactive screening to celebrate all of us who were part of MuchMusic - both on camera, behind the scenes and everyone at who watched at home. People thought he was crazy. How can an independent filmmaker with ZERO marketing budget sell enough tickets at gala pricing? Well I’m happy to say that there are less than 200 tickets left to having sold out all 1800 seats at the most prestigious venue in the city. Leveraging the influence and reach of the original MuchMusic VJs, word spread organically. We’ve been warmly embraced by the media (thanks to the hard work of publicist @thatEricAlper). But it’s really been word of mouth and grassroots support from everyone who grew up watching us over the years. Thank you to every single one of you. But my biggest thank you is to Sean Menard who believed the legacy of MuchMusic needed to be preserved and celebrated, and was brave enough to bet his house on it.
