Leaving your dog alone? Do this before you walk out the door. Separation anxiety doesn’t start when you leave… It starts when you leave without preparing them. Here’s what to do 👇 ✅ 1. Drain their energy first Take them for a short walk or play session. A tired dog is a calm dog. ✅ 2. Don’t make a big goodbye No emotional hugging or dramatic “bye baby.” Stay calm. Leave casually. ✅ 3. Give mental enrichment Leave a chew, stuffed toy, or treat puzzle. This keeps their brain busy instead of focusing on your absence. ✅ 4. Create a safe comfort spot Their bed + familiar smell + calm environment. Dogs relax better in predictable spaces. ✅ 5. Practice short exits daily Leave for 5–10 minutes randomly. This trains them that you always come back. Your dog doesn’t hate being alone. They just hate being confused. Train them. Prepare them. Don’t just leave them. Reactivity can feel isolating as hell, but you’re not alone – and you’re not failing. Working through reactivity is HARD. And it asks a lot from both ends of the lead. But you’re still showing up – even through the bad days, the tears, the judgemental looks – that counts so much more than you realise. Today, I can proudly say that walking past other dogs without a blow up is our new normal. Reactions are few and far between (though we still sometimes have our moments). When you feel that dread before you walk out the door with your reactive dog… remember that the walk doesn’t have to be perfect. Success might be getting to the letterbox without tension, or walking past that trigger an inch closer than you did last week. None of those moments feel huge at the time. But string them together. and suddenly you look back and realise you’re standing somewhere you weren’t sure you’d ever reach. So if you’re seeing this and in the midst of your reactivity training journey – keep your head up, and keep showing up for your dog. It takes a whole lot of time, patience, courage, and mutual learning – but it IS possible. To them, it’s the highlight of their entire 24-hour day. 💔 Most people don’t realize that when we stare at our phones on a walk, we aren’t just “multitasking” we are effectively leaving our dogs alone in public. 3 things your dog wishes you knew about their walk: 1. The “Sniff” is their Social Media: Their sense of smell is 10,000x stronger than ours. When they sniff, they are “reading the news.” Pulling them away because you’re distracted is like someone closing your eyes while you’re reading a text. 2. The “Check-In” Look: They look back to see if you’re “with” them. To a pack animal, being ignored feels like a form of social rejection. 3. The “Engine” needs maintenance: We want these walks to last forever, but their joints feel every step. While we protect their hearts by being present, we have to protect their mobility so they can keep exploring for years to come.
