These 5 dorm items are straight from my daughter. They’re not on every list - but they should be! 1. 🔌 Power Strip - with USB and USB-C ports (45W+ will charge laptops too). Make sure it has a long cord, the longer the better! 2. 💡Secondary Lighting - Dorm overhead lighting is harsh and industrial. Think: lamps, string lights, fairy lights or LED light strips. Go cozy, calming, and make the space feel like home, not a hospital! 3. 🛏️ Mattress topper - this is probably on most dorm checklists…. But have you heard of the cooling gel mattress toppers? Yup - if your kid runs warm, this will help them sleep so much better (and less sweaty) 4. 🧽 8x10 PATTERNED Rug - Dorm floors = cold tile or mystery carpet. Pro tip: most lists recommend a 5x7, go bigger, tuck it under the bed and pick a pattern to hide stains! 5. Woozoo Fan - if you haven’t heard about this small, but mighty, fan check it out! 💕DON’T MAKE THIS MISTAKE: the items you should NEVER put in your dorm room! 1. Artwork that is disproportionately small for a space. 30x40 & 36x48 are nice larger sizes that we mostly do in dorms! 🖼️ 2. Candles - never light a candle in your dorm room. This could cause a fire and a massive problem for your whole building! 🔥 3. Alcohol- dorm RA’s can frequently check rooms. This is not something you want to have in your dorm room. 4. Bulky luggage- your closet will be too small to keep large luggage- opt for foldable duffel bags instead 5. Clothes for all seasons- wait until it turns colder to bring your boots and heavy coats- you may be able to squeeze it all in, but it’s better to have less in your small space! 6. Too many competing patterns and colors- stick with one main pattern design and let your colors flow from there. 3-4 main colors in your room is plenty! You know what they say about the early bird! 🐛 This is actually one of the best times to grab dorm basics, before prices surge and while they are still in low demand! 🛌 I’ve painstakingly organized everything you will need in my Ultimate Dorm Essentials collection of idea lists. Here’s my advice on things that are actually safe to buy ahead for the dorms - the essentials they will need no matter what, no matter the dorm setup: SAFE TO BUY NOW 1. Twin XL bedding - foam topper (grab it now!!), sheets, comforter or duvet, mattress protector, pillows, etc. 2. Shower stuff - shower shoes, caddy, robe, towels/washcloths (2-3 sets) 3. Laundry essentials - detergent, color catcher sheets, dryer sheets, portable laundry bag, hamper, body wash, etc. 4. Fan - a must-have, so grab one on sale! 5. Air purifier - do not skip this essential for staying healthy in the dorms 6. Small vacuum - this is my son’s top pick for dorm essentials 7. Moving bags - I prefer those that open trunk style. 8. Power strips/extension cords - you’re going to need multiple and will likely go back for more later! 9. Reusable water bottle - get the bottle, but wait to buy the filter/pitcher until you know more about your room. 10. School supplies - iPad, laptop, backpack - get it all on sale! WAIT UNTIL YOU KNOW YOUR SETUP 1. Room decor - wait until you see the space + your roommate’s vibe 2. Kitchen stuff - you may not need it 3. Large furniture - almost always unnecessary 4. Small Furniture - wait until you know your specific room config to buy things like a bedside table, bed risers, ottoman, desktop shelf, etc. 5.
