What’s up with CDOT today? Dot’s here to explain another piece of the roadway puzzle… pavement markings, ✨at night.✨ There’s a lot of different road markings on #Colorado highways – lane lines, turn lanes, shoulder lines, crosswalks, even icons indicating reduced speed or a major junction up ahead. These markings are extremely necessary to help you get from Point A to Point B safely. How often and where a road gets striped is determined with the help of our #TeamCDOT engineers. If a road marking is too worn down, it can lose some of its reflectiveness, making it much harder to use as a guide while driving. Our engineers help ensure that doesn’t happen. It’s reasonable to think that the markings on the road are paint, right? That’s not wrong, but it’s also not fully correct. There’s four big categories that the markings on the road fall into: 1️⃣Yes… Paint. This is mostly used for unbroken lines on rural roads that see less traffic. 2️⃣Epoxy: Typically used for unbroken lines where there are higher volumes of traffic, as it is a more durable material. When epoxy is used, it cures and hardens to the road. 3️⃣Preformed plastic: A little bit of the road gets milled down, and we “glue” plastic pieces to the road, rolling them down to secure them. This material kind of looks like a roll of tape. Skip lines (like dashed lane lines) are created with this method! 4️⃣Thermoplastic material: These are preformed pieces of plastic – think crosswalks, words and symbols – that are applied to the road with heat.
