The first 3 lines you draw determine what angle the rest of your drawing will be in. 2.) Rotating forms - A lot of dynamic poses require twisting and turning of forms. Learning how to rotate simple forms like cubes is much easier to do than complex anatomy. You can even use cube mannequins to pose characters and plan your drawings. 3.) The Best Sketching Exercise Part 4 🔥✍️ 1.) Turn 2D Shapes to 3D Forms - Here your goal is to use contour lines. It’s like a “string” wrapping around the shape! Once you draw the contour, you should get a sense of volume. 2.) Overlap - Notice how I folded some of the shapes to make them feel like they’re bending. This is especially important once you start learning anatomy. One of the biggest challenges to draw realistic figures is learning how to draw overlap. 3.) Drawing Through - drawing through is like having a pair of x-ray goggles. You have to imagine seeing through the form and what it would look like if the line wrapped around completely and you could see it. Cut a slice out and see what the shape is. Push it back in space… then bring it forward. No reference. You’re training your ability to hold and manipulate form in your mind. If the perspective shifts feel off, that’s the feedback. Run it again and correct it. This is how imagination is built. Not by waiting for ideas… but by learning how forms behave in space so you can move them freely. You’re training perspective, proportion, and confident edges. Level 2: Modify the box. Slice corners off. Cut planes away. Change the silhouette. Now the form becomes more interesting and more useful. Level 3: Use those boxes to construct a large fish turning through the water. Same foundation. Bigger result. That’s how drawing actually works. Complex subjects are usually just simple forms used intelligently. One student told me: “I used to think imagination was magic. Turns out it was boxes.” That’s the shift. You stop seeing a fish as impossible… and start seeing forms you already know how to use. If you want drawing from imagination to feel real, train the shapes everything is built from.
