Latest work in progress. I’ve been obsessed with the idea of trees as homes/houses/havens/habitats, not only for animals, insects, fungi and others but for beings like spirits, ever since I learnt of the kami shrine in the Camphor Tree of Kawago and how the Japanese Shintoists believe that kami (supernatural entities/spirits) inhabit all things. A lovely example of a Kami is Totoro who was a spirit of the forest. And how trees are a living body but they embody so many other roles in this world and can accomplish so much while being completely still their whole lives (besides growing and moving in the wind [which imagine must feel great to a tree]). Humans are very out of sync with the natural world. And living in the mind removes us further. We assume a lot and think in a very specific way these days. When I was younger I became aware how others think and feel differently to me and so began to become more considerate and developed better people skills. When I became aware of how everything around me has a totally different perspective to what I do I began watching and placing myself in that position as best I could to try and understand what it would be like from that perspective. Trees are the most interesting so far. They are so totally different to us but hold all the ideals that are found universally (for peace). The most incredibly magnificent beings who are almost totally invisible to humans because they blend in with the surroundings. I wonder if it is because they totally lack ego and human egos are drawn to each other for our inherent survival need for status. Anyway, here’s my drawing I hope you like it so far!
