As @grandmother_sarah said, “Our dreams seed the future.” Many months ago I had wisps of dreamings about the women at @templeofbelonging feeling safe and held inside our Mother’s dense, wet clay womb. In the beginning, with my highly calculated and proportioned drawings, I thought I would be crafting the Great Mother, but as always, She started to work on me. I procrastinated sourcing materials and getting a design, so I asked my own Mom, Karin Julene, for help and to be my model. Her measurements became the sculpture, scaled 2.4 times. I reached out to my community for materials and the men showed up with offerings for me to build her bones and foundation, so honored to give. Several days deep, and way behind on this passion project, friends stopped by with food prepared to keep me going, a camera to document the process, advice on proportions, and words of reverence to the entity appearing from behind the wood, chicken wire, and straw. It felt like something much larger was starting to happen. It took three work sessions during the gathering to finesse her basecoat into place. She is radiant and beautiful. Her face welcomes us in, her womb a place of refuge and release. We get naked around her, applying mud to her body and our bodies. Tears, laughter, ideas, doubts, and possibilities all swirl around her. And then it all starts tumbling out… An altar is set up, with offerings of cedar, sage, and tears made. A girls’ Rite of Passage @wild.rivers.collective happens with The Great Mother, her womb serving as the point of transition for these beautiful, flowering souls. Other workshop facilitators and photographers want to include her in their experiences. The Great Mother is rarely alone, always with someone meditating inside of her, singing, gazing at her, taking sweet pictures with her. An impromptu grief ceremony happens late on the last night, emergent and tender.
