Taking that first step / roll toward booking your dream trip can be kind of daunting, especially as a wheelchair user. Trust me, I get it. Before I booked my trip to Antarctica, I was sooo worried. Would it be everything I wanted it to be? Would it be accessible? Would it be worth the cost? But once I went on that trip and saw a whale for the first time, all of my worries went away. Truthfully, I have never gone on any trip and later regretted it. Travel is always worth it and instead of putting off your dream trip until later (or until retirement like many Americans do), take that trip now if possible. If you’re ready to take the first step / roll toward booking your dream trip, here are a few tips for you: 1) Start by checking when the best time of year is to go on this trip. For example, you probably don’t want to go on your dream trip to Australia when it’s the middle of winter there or to Death Valley when it’s unbearably HOT, so doing some research and figuring out when is the best time to go is a good idea. 2) Dream trips can be expensive, so think about ways you can save money without sacrificing the enjoyment during your trip. You could book the cheapest airfare (like Basic Economy tickets on Delta… this is something I frequently do) and use the money you saved for activities once you’re in the destination. Credit card rewards can massively help with trip costs as well! For your dream trip, only travel with people that you know enjoy the same activities as you and will be equally as excited as you are about going. Being at Disney World on your dream trip and having your companion complain about the long lines all day would be a real bummer, after all. We booked a flight deal to Dakar, Senegal for summer break for $400RT! When I posted this in stories people were like wait wasn’t that deal from NY and don’t you live in Miami? Yes it was & yes we do! Some deals are just worth flying to catch!! (Save & share this post): Typically this flight to visit Dakar is $1,500pp from NY and $2000 from Miami so getting it for $400 is a steal. We’re flying out of JFK and the flight is nonstop & since we have so many JetBlue points we got those RT tickets all on points & only $33.60 for taxes making each of our flights a total of $433.60 (3-4xcheaper than this flight normally is). Even if you don’t have points or miles you can sometimes get very cheap flights to other airports & even if you can’t, sometimes even with the added cost of the flight to the city the deal is out of the overall cost is still way cheaper. For those in the NE taking the train or bus to another city is also an option. I used to take the Mega Bus from DC to NY for $1 all the time! These are called repositioning flights and we’ve even done this a different way. Sometimes we get a flight deal from home to another country that isn’t our final destination. For instance when we went to Thailand we went on a deal to Singapore for $450RT. From Singapore flights to Phuket were only 1hr & $35 meanwhile flying straight to Thailand was $1,300RT. Flying within SE Asia & Europe is extremely affordable so say you want to go to Paris but flights to Amsterdam are half the cost, book those & then buy a flight from there to Paris or better you can even take the train (no luggage restrictions). Plus w/both of these scenarios they give you the opportunity to visit two places. On that trip to Thailand we also spent time in Singapore since we were already flying there. Who’s ready for the most epic of adventures? And I mean, I am shaking I am so excited. This is day one… getting there… and probably the least interesting part of what is set to be a ten day road trip that I am almost certain will blow both of our minds!
